Hoguera de un instante casual (Bonfire of a casual instant)

viernes, 24 de febrero de 2012 Hoguera de un instante casual El pasado  noviembre estaba rodando junto a Javier Ruibal con David Arenal, Fernando Casado y Wanda Pacheco en el Tompkins Square Park de NYC, renombrado después como el Charlie Parker Place en 1992, cuando de pronto un hombre que  deambulaba por allí (daba la sensación de vivir en la calle o por lo menos pasaba mucho tiempo en ella) me pidió que tocara algo para rapear y cantar encima. Sin pensarlo, me puse a improvisar y esto fue lo que sucedió. Un diálogo entre dos realidades conectadas desde un impulso primitivo, desnudo, sin pretensiones, la simple necesidad ancestral de comunicarse  más allá de lo aprendido. Causa y efecto de los encuentros fortuitos que llevan consigo la luz de lo premonitorio, eso que se ha ido gestando en las aguas del tiempo pasado, conspirando con el tiempo futuro para ir tejiendo los hilos de la casualidad,  las coincidencias gestadas de antemano que nos sorprenden en el punto de encuentro del tiempo presente. Mirando después con David el material, nos dimos cuenta de que tenía algo, desde fuera, tomando distancia, nos sorprendió por la frescura y porque curiosamente lo que rapeaba el personaje estaba relacionado en alguna medida con el concepto de “La ruta de las almas”. Nunca supimos como se llamaba, ¡que pena!, ojalá volvamos a verlo y podamos poner su nombre en los créditos. Aún así, decidimos editarlo y mostrarlo en este blog para que no se  perdiera ese momento único, cocinado alrededor de la hoguera de un instante casual. Para darle un poco de ambiente, le programé unas percusiones de tambores asiáticos y un órgano que le diera un aire medio blues-funky-jazz en alusión al contexto, homenajeando al entorno,  la ciudad de NYC,  cuna de multiculturalidad, convivencia y música. friday 24th of february 2012 Bonfire of a casual instant The last month of November I was shooting together with Javier Ruibal, with David Arenal, Fernando Casado and Wanda Pacheco in the Tompkins Square Park of New York City, renamed after as the Charlie Parker place in 1992, when suddenly a man who was strolling there (he gave the sensation to live in the street, or at least spending a lot of time in it) asked me to play something like a Rap for him to sing on it. Without thinking, I improvised and this is what succeeds: a dialog between two realities connected from a primitive impulse, naked and without pretension, the plain ancestral necessity of connecting beyond what we learnt... Cause and effect of the fortuity meetings, which are taking with them the light of the premonition, that was in gestation in the waters of the past time, conspiring with the future time to go weaving the threads of the casualty, the coincidences prepared in advance, that surprise us in the meeting point of the present time. After that, looking to the material with David, taking distance we realised that we have something which surprised us for its freshness and curiously because what the man was singing was in some form related to the concept of THE ROAD OF SOULS. We never knew his name, what a shame, if only we can see him and we can put his name in the credits. Even like that we decided to edit it and show it in this blog to be sure that this unique moment will not be lost, cooked around the bonfire of a casual instant. To give it a little of ambiance, I programmed some percussions of Asian drums and an organ, in a way to give it an air of blues-funky-jazz alluding to the context, homage to the background, the city of New York, cradle of multicultural coexistence and music. Pavel Urkiza y Javier Ruibal, complicidades y amistad en la ruta. (Pavel Urkiza and Javier Ruibal, complicity and friendship on the road)

sábado, 18 de febrero de 2012 Pavel Urkiza y Javier Ruibal, complicidades y amistad en La Ruta. La relación entre el cubano y el gaditano viene de lejos. Del maestro Javier Ruibal está todo dicho, no hay más que echar un vistazo a su sólida carrera, a la legión de fans que sigue llenando sus escenarios o a la cantidad de artistas que se consideran deudores de su obra y caminantes de las sendas que él inició. Casi recién llegado a España, en torno al año 1993 Pavel cantaba con Gema Corredera en el Bar Amaranta de San Fernando (Cádiz). Al finalizar el concierto se acercó el guitarrista gaditano Antonio Toledo y les presentó a Javier Ruibal, cantante y compositor del cercano Puerto de Santa María, que había quedado encantado con el concierto. Corrían los tiempos de preparación de sendos discos que acabaron siendo antológicos: Javier su célebre Pensión Triana, y Pavel el disco de Gema y Pavel Trampas del tiempo. Enseguida quedaron impactados por la música del otro y por lo que de semejantes tenían sus intuiciones y alquimias musicales, a priori forjadas en latitudes lejanas. Pronto se consolidó esta admiración mutua y nació una duradera amistad. Además de colaboraciones esporádicas en conciertos del otro y de compartir escenarios en diferentes eventos, pudieron grabar la canción Alma y Luna, en un disco inédito de Gema y Pavel llamado Filin Progresivo. Desde entonces estaban con ganas de volver a hacer algo juntos.   Desde el primer momento Pavel tuvo claro que en este proyecto Javier iba a tener un papel importante; en primer lugar porque la emulsión musical de La ruta de las almas tiene ecos de otras búsquedas de Javier (el cual, como se autodefiniría recientemente en una entrevista, lleva años <<mezclando todo, como buscando el folklore o las nuevas músicas de un país que todavía no existe>>). Y sobre todo por el entusiasmo mostrado por el proyecto desde que escuchó las primeras grabaciones.  A mediados de noviembre Javier grabó las voces de la canción Jerusalem en el Estudio Cezanne, en Madrid. Gracias al entusiasmo creciente y a que la agenda de ambos fue favorable, Pavel y Javier pudieron coincidir a finales de ese mismo mes en Nueva York, inspiradora ciudad de mezclas y encuentros musicales, presente en algunas de las canciones más célebres de Javier como La canción del gitano o La gloria de Manhattan, y donde se grabaron algunos discos de Pavel como Desnudos, así como partes de Art Bembé y Ofrenda Borinquen. Allí grabaron secuencias para el videoclip de la canción Jerusalem, y hasta compartieron escenario en un concierto que Javier dio en la sucursal neoyorkina del Instituto Cervantes. De nuevo con la complicidad de las agendas pudimos coincidir allí con el israelí David Broza, músico superlativo y viejo amigo de Javier, sobre cuya importante participación en el proyecto pronto escribiremos otro post. En este ambiente de complicidades en la Gran Manzana, Javier y Pavel también compartieron paseos por la ciudad, camaradería, humor y mucho amor. También visitas y entrevistas a otros artistas previstas en el proyecto, algunas de las cuales acabaron con ronda de guitarras e improvisaciones inesperadas... Muchas de esas imágenes podrán verse pronto en el documental del proyecto. Como en la City la noche es larga, la cosa dio hasta para ir juntos a algún concierto de otros amigos músicos participantes en La ruta de las almas, como el del percusionista y cantante Pedrito Martínez en el Club Guantanamera, o el del John Benítez Quintet en el que participan el saxofonista Yosvany Terry y el pianista Manuel Valera, en el Jazz Standard. Javier viajará también a Jerusalem, Cádiz y Granada, algunas de las próximas estaciones de este proyecto. Es una suerte poder contar con un compañero de ruta como él. Gracias maestro. Saturday, 18th of february 2012 Pavel Urkiza and Javier Ruibal complicity and friendship on The Road The relation between the Cuban and the Gaditano is coming from very far. From the Master Javier Ruibal everything as been told, only looking to his solid career, to the numerous fans that continue to fill his concerts or the quantity of artists who consider themselves in debt with his works and walking on the tracks that he initiated. Recently arrived to Spain, around the year 1993, Pavel was singing with Gema Corredera in the bar Amaranta of San Fernando (Cadiz). At the end of the concert, the guitarist Antonio Toledo introduced Javier Ruibal, singer and compositor, from the near Puerto of Santa Maria, who has been delighted with the concert. It was the time of the preparation of disks which will be of anthology: Javier and his famous Pension Triana, and Pavel’s disk Gema and Pavel- Tramps of the Time – After that they were impacted by the music of one each other and for the closesness of their intuitions and musical alchemies, a priori forged in distant latitudes. Promptly was consolidated this mutual admiration and a true and long friendship. As well as sporadically collaborations in the concerts of the other, sharing scenarios in different events, they recorded the song Alma y Luna, in a disk of Gema and Pavel, called Filin Progressivo. From this moment they wanted to go back to work together. From the first moment Pavel knew that in this project Javier would have an important role: in first place because the musical emulsion of THE ROAD OF THE SOULS has echoes of other research of Javier (who defines himself in a recent interview: from years I am mixing everything, as well as looking for the folklore or the new music of a country which still does not exist). But over all for the enthusiasm showed for the project from the first moment he listened to the first recordings. In the middle of November, Javier recorded the voices of the song JERUSALEM in the Studio Cezanne, in Madrid. Thanks to the crescent enthusiasm and to the fact that their two agendas were in favour, Pavel and Javier could coincide at the end of the month in New York, inspiring city of mixing and musical meetings, present in some of the most famous songs of Javier, as the CANCION DEL GITANO or the GLORIA OF MANHATTAN, and where they recorded some disks of Pavel, like DESNUDOS, as well as some parts of ART BEMBE and OFRENDA BORINQUEN. There, they recorded sequences for the video clip of JERUSALEM and to the point of sharing the scenario of the concert that Javier gave in the Instituto Cervantes of New York. Once again with the complicity of the agendas we could coincide with the Israeli David Broza, excellent artist and old friend of Javier, of what important participation in the project, we will write another post. In this ambiance of complicities in the Big Apple, Javier and Pavel also shared promenades in the city, friendship, humour and a lot of love. There were also visits and interviews to other artists foreseen to participate in the project, some terminating with rounds of guitars and unexpected improvisations... Many of them could be seen promptly in the documental of the project. As in the City, the night is very long, they could go together to some concerts of other musicians, friends who participate in THE ROAD OF THE SOULS, as the drummer and singer Pedrito Martinez in the Club Guantanamera, or the one of John Benitez Quintet, where participate the saxophonist Yosvany Terry and the pianist Manuel Valera, in the Jazz Standard. Javier will also travel to Jerusalem, Cadiz and Granada, some of the next stations of this project. Is a real chance to count with a road fellow as him.
